Diary of a Cricket

£250.00

In the artwork, the artist has skillfully combined a classic Vietnamese novel with contemporary elements, set against the backdrop of Vũng Tàu. The monochromatic palette and intricate detailing of the linocut medium give the piece a timeless feel, while the modern setting adds a unique twist. - VIEW ON LAPTOP/DESKTOP etc. FOR FULL IMAGE -

The artwork is based on the famous Vietnamese children’s story by writer Tô Hoài, about an adventourous cricket named Mèn. In the story he leaves home and goes on a long journey through the animal kingdom and faces many difficulties, that he must overcome. It's a coming-of-age story that uses the animal kingdom as a metaphor for human society. The central message of Diary of a Cricket is about personal growth and the importance of empathy, humility, and social responsibility.

The artist shows the cricket and his concord of brothers in the foreground, in their journey upwards into the 21st century and modern day Vietnam. One can see the main beachfront road with graffiti on the wall saying ‘LOVE YOU’ and a container ship on the sea in the distance. In addition, silhouettes of fishing boats sit beneath the large, bright moon to the right of the composition. A figure sitting on a scooter, surveys the scene in passing, much like the crickets, who survey everything.

This beautifully, hand carved relief print is highly original in content and would be a fantastic addition to your art collection or wall space.
